40 YEARS OF CRAFT
1986 - 2026
For forty years, Maiwa has worked alongside artisans, dyers, weavers, block printers, embroiderers, farmers and makers. We have travelled, documented, taught, traded, asked questions, and, above all, listened.
A QUIET MANIFESTO
A Quiet Manifesto for the Preservation of Craft grew out of those forty years. First published 20 years ago, A Quiet Manifesto has been completely revisited for Maiwa’s fortieth year - reworked, expanded and brought forward to reflect forty years of relationships, making, teaching and craft.
It is not really a book about Maiwa. Maiwa has simply been the conduit for an idea: that craft matters.
Craft carries knowledge of materials, of place, of the hand, and of generations. And it cannot be preserved simply by admiring it or documenting it. It must remain alive. It must be made, used, valued, traded, taught, and carried forward.
40 YEARS OF STORIES
Telling stories is at the heart of the work we do at Maiwa. The focus continually returns to artisans, cloth, knowledge, documentation, teaching, relationships, trade, and the future of making. Again and again we are quietly reminded:
This work matters. These stories matter. Craft matters.
Throughout November, our celebration of craft and the stories, talent and traditions behind it will unfold here. Each week, we invite you to delve deeper into the work of the artisans Maiwa partners with.
