These shellac flakes are refined from the secretions of the lac insect. The same insect gives both lac dye and shellac. Shellac flakes are used in wood finishing as a varnish and in ink making to make waterproof ink. In both cases the shellac flakes need to be dissolved. How you dissolve them will depend on your particular use.
These flakes range from light brown to light amber.
