Mumbai Block Print Shawl - Handwoven Silk - Fleur

$395.00

A modern take on a centuries-old craft: these incredible pieces take block printing into a new register.

This piece features contemporary wood blocks specially cut to imitate distressed painterly techniques, combined with the more familiar play of repeat geometric forms. The handwoven silk, in combination with natural dyes, glows with an incredible vibrancy and has elegant drape.

Silk is naturally warming - so it makes for a good shawl to keep you warm in the winter months and worn long as a show-stopper with your favourite outfit.

Over the centuries, communities of block printers have often migrated. When they do, their designs and ways of working change and evolve. This is certainly true of the Mumbai block printers. Originally dyers from Kachchh, Gujarat, Ahmed Khatri and his son Sarfraz Khatri have taken the art of hand block printing in a completely new direction. Still working with natural dyes and traditional processes, they only work in contemporary designs they themselves create. They have designed an astonishing array of special hand carved blocks to create both motifs and unusual distressed effects.
