Yoruba Batik and Tie Dye

Traditional Yoruba batik uses hot wax for a resist. Students will learn ways of applying hot wax to cloth and will obain a thorough knowledge of the dyeing and final removal of the wax as well.

Join Gasali Adeyemo, a traditional Yoruba artisan from Nigeria, as he takes students through the techniques of traditional Yoruba batik. Gasali will give an overview of the technique and its meanings for the Yoruba culture. Batik has its own range of motifs distinct from those used in traditional adire work.

In this class Gasali will also teach the process of tie dye using raffia to bind the fabric and then dyeing the fabric with traditional methods. Students will learn the techniques as well as the history and the culture behind the processes.

Gasali Adeyemo will also be teaching the Yoruba Indigo: Adire and Tie Dye workshop.


Gasali Adeyemo

Gasali Adeyemo grew up in Ofatedo, Nigeria, where he put himself through high school by sketching portraits at social gatherings. He studied for six years at the Nike Centre for Arts and Culture and then remained an additional four as a teacher.

In 1995 Gasali exhibited his textiles in Bayruth, Germany, and his international reputation was born. A participant in the Iowa Color Congress 2002, the World Batik Conference, and Fiber Arts Center, Gasali has made it his life’s work to give workshops, presentations, and lectures in order to communicate the beauty of adire textiles and share the Yoruba culture.
