In this one-day class students will be introduced to basic bookbinding terms and techniques through a simple introductory project. Students will then learn how to make a 5 3/4” x 7 1/4” open-spine book with Coptic binding (the oldest known form of the bound book). They will make book cloth for this cloth-bound volume, create signatures, and sew signatures, all using traditional materials and equipment. A variety of visuals will be on hand to help participants appreciate the materials and resources currently on the market. Variations of the open-spine book will be discussed. A longer version of this workshop is also offered as Bookbinding Gaye Hansen Gaye Hansen has an extensive background in bookbinding and the textile arts. She is a master weaver who has taught weaving workshops for over 30 years. In 2002 she was chair of the Convergence Conference of the Hand Weavers Guilds of America. She has also been active with the Vancouver Weavers and Spinners Guild and is author of five Canadian best-selling cookbooks.
