Silk Painting
Instructor: Izabela Sauer
$225 (Includes $65 lab fee)

September 22, 23 (Mon, Tue) 10am - 4pm
Maiwa East: 1310 Odlum - Class Limit 14

This class introduces the student of silk painting to the advanced technique of working with thickened dyes. Thickened dye permits full flexibility of colour application: the dye does not bleed on the fabric and resist borders are unnecessary. Moreover the delicate drape and shimmer of the silk remains after dyeing. The student can progress toward a masterly control of painterly techniques. The technique also opens the door to working with intense, dark, saturated colours.

Students will work on crêpe de Chine, charmeuse, and jaquard silks creating both a series of swatches and a finished square piece that may be either a scarf or a wall hanging. Students will receive a quick review of silk painting methods but should have some familiarity with the process. Enthusiastic beginners are also welcome.

Izabela Sauer

Izabela was born in Gdansk, an ancient Baltic Sea harbour town in Poland. From 1985–89 she studied at the Gdansk Academy of Fine Arts and then with the Yolanda Lorrette Fashion Company in Chicago.

Izabela’s own company, Alarte Silks, has been established as a successful craft business in Vancouver since 1991. At the centre of all Alarte’s products are luxurious hand-painted silks. These exquisite, fine quality fabrics are individually hand painted with unique artistic designs by Izabela. A resident of BC, Izabela has cunningly arranged to accomplish much of her design work and product development from the deck of a 50-foot sailboat in the South Pacific. She is the recipient of numerous awards for excellence in craft including the 2007 Niche Award. Her work may be seen at www.alartesilks.com.
