Cochineal dye consists of whole dried insects of the species Dactylopius Coccus. This dye yields fuchsias to purples on most natural fibers. Although
it is expensive it has a high dye content and goes a long way. You will need 3-5% bugs to WOF (weight of Fiber) for medium depth of shade.
Dyeing instructions:
The colourant is extracted from the dried insects. Gently grind the insects in a blender or use a mortar and pestle to crush them to a fine powder. You will need 1 oz to dye 1 pound of fiber (or 70 g for 1 kilo of fiber).
